Becoming a Biomedical Engineer CT scans, MRI, ultrasound, and X-ray machines are just a few examples of medical equipment created by biomedical engineers that have transformed the medical world. Without these machines many easy medical procedures that have saved thousands of people's lives would not be possible. Biomedical engineering is the combination of life and technology, and is the reason for the technology. I like this topic because it allows people’s lives to bettered which is why I have selected it for my capstone. Biomedical engineers always have something to learn because the technology can always be improved. I wanted to do a project somewhere in the field of engineering because I was accepted into Virginia Tech’s engineering program. In my AP biology class I have realized the love I have for the subject. I figured that combining the two fields that I love by interning in the field of bio-engineering would be the perfect topic to pursue. For the project, I plan to volunteer at the Valley Health Winchester Medical Center where I will shadow a biomedical engineer. Molly Scanlon, has arranged for intern with the engineer to learn about the daily tasks they must complete at the hospital. My project is called becoming a bio engineer because it will be the first steps of my potential occupations. I have selected the career exploration strand of projects because I feel it will be the most beneficial for me in the future. Through this project, I hope to discover if I want to become a biomedical engineer. Additionally, I would like to learn about the biotechnology the hospital has. It will entail a trip to the hospital fon 15 workdays for five hours a week. I will be working close with a biomedical engineer named Thomas. I will have to dress professionally every day, and keep patient confidentiality. The experience will benefit me in the future. Currently, I am learning about biotechnology in my AP biology class. I will be able to use the information I have learned in class during my internship to obtain the most out of the experience as possible. I am not as knowledgeable on medical surgeries which I will expand my knowledge on during the internship by shadowing others. The project will be shadowing because of how complicated the topic of biotechnology is. However, it will be beneficial to me because I will be able to discover if being a bioengineer is something I want to do the rest of my life. This project will help me grow because it will allow me to plan for the future, and learn what a real occupation would be like. This project will possibly help me choose what math I choose for my future. I have known for a while that I want to go into engineering. When I was accepted into Virginia Tech’s Engineering program I began to think what field of engineering I want to pursue. My two first thoughts were Computer Science and Biomedical engineering because I am passionate about both topics. By doing this internship, I will be more prepared to know what decision is best for me. I anticipate that this will impact me by increasing my passion for the topic. My senior capstone will open up many opportunities for me in the future.
